Growing
A few main rules of growing black terrier puppy
ANYTHING THAT IS FORBIDDEN TO A GROWN-UP DOG, MUST BE FORBIDDEN TO A PUPPY:
Feed the puppy using a stand the height of which must be enough for the puppy to eat while turning up his head high, meaning slightly above the puppy’s chest level.
Do not spoil your puppy with sweets and leftovers from the table, aside from teaching your dog to beg you can ruin its health.
The best brands of dry feed for puppies are Eucanuba, EaglePac, Hill’s, Bosh, HappyDog and other premium foods.
If your puppy feeds on natural produce, then it will also need a dose of mineral supplements increased by ⅓, or complementary vitamin supplements.
If your puppy eats dry feed, we recommend giving it a full dose of mineral supplements, along with vitamins.
At the age of 2 months the puppy must be fed 5 to 6 times a day; 3-4 months - 4 times; 5-9 months - 3 times; 9 months and further - 2 times.
Never pull anything out of the puppy’s mouth, you might damage the puppy’s occlusion.
Brush your puppy daily so that in the future the dog treats that procedure with ease.
Never rub the puppy on the head since you might ruin the ear positioning.
Watch the teeth transition (age 3.5 to 7 months) and timely remove old milk teeth if they don’t fall out on their own and there is already a new tooth growing out at the same spot. The normal occlusion is scissor-like. Also make sure to inspect the puppy’s mouth often so that it gets used to the procedure.
If you plan on participating in exhibitions, teach your puppy to stand in the exhibition posture from the age of 2 months by the food plate and from the age of 4-5 months at the exhibition ring-leash. Also from 5-6 months teach the puppy to move at a trot by your side at the ring-leash.
At 2 months the puppy needs to undergo vaccination, repeat after 14 days, next vaccination is done at 6 months after the teeth have fully changed.
Make sure to deworm the puppy 10 days prior to vaccination.
You can walk with your puppy no earlier than 10 days after vaccination.
During walks make sure the puppy doesn’t get hurt, it is better to walk with non-aggressive dogs of similar size. Be careful about the puppy traumatizing itself until it reaches the age of one year, before that the dog’s ligaments and joints are weak (jumps, obstacles, games with other dogs).
Timely cut your puppy’s nails (approx. once a month).
First trimming at 4-5 months, then depending on your wishes, approx. each 2-3 months.
Take care of the dog’s hair, it must be brushed and without knots.
It is preferable to wash the puppy’s beard after 4 months, once each 3 days before bed and treat it with hair balm (in case you want your dog later on to have attractive decorative hair).
Never condone aggression!
The puppy needs to socialize, meaning let it get acquainted with the surrounding world, let strangers rub it (don’t think that it will render the dog unable to protect you further on), walk around lots of people, cars, unknown sounds, let it ride with you on the elevator, in the car, let it play with other dogs, etc. The more your puppy converses, the more it will adapt! Naturally, all of it must come in steadily and softly and only with positive response from the puppy, with tasty rewards and games. Don’t blow up firecrackers under the puppy and force it into a rumbling elevator if it doesn’t want to!
From 6-7 months we recommend to start training (obedience) at the training grounds.
Sentinel and guard-type training should not begin until the age of one year!
In spring, from March and up until October, don’t forget the treat the puppy with products against fleas and ticks. The best way is to combine the neck band and drops. If an acarid has been removed from the dog, take the piraplasmosis test!
